Camping Mattress: A Nice Camping Comfort

Another of life's' portable luxuries you can take with you on a camping trip is a good camping mattress. Whilst on the surface a camping mattress may seem like a bit of a luxury compared to the good old days of roughing it, believe me if it makes to difference between a good nights sleep, or not, then to me I would rather sleep well in my sleeping bag on a comfortable surface and get more enjoyment out of my holiday.

Camping is a good fit for a family on a tight budget because it is so much cheaper than staying in hotels. Whilst you may be trading a comfortable bed for a camping bed, these days you don't need to compromise too much. I personally find that the worst part about camping is sleeping out on the ground. I remember once in desperation we even tried using the air mattresses that we used for floating on in the lake, but this just did not compare to the comfort of the next trip when we bought a new camping mattress. When we used the air mattress the damn sleeping bags kept sliding around and every time you shifted even slightly it squeaked and squawked and was in general a bad night's sleep. Invest in a camping mattress was the best thing we did, and even though the top line models were out out of our price range, we bought a thick piece foam from a rubber store and wrapped it in a water proof cover. It was way more comfortable than kipping on the ground, but we found it bulky to pack and to store.

Even though this was a big step forward, it was not ideal so we stopped going camping until we could save up and afford to purchase a decent camping mattress. We found that there was a huge range of choices from built-for-purpose inflatables There is a model that that is self inflating as it is rolled out, and when fully inflated you simply close the valve. Deflate is likewise as simple as opening the valve and pressing down on the mattress . It was simple to set up, but not all that thick the comfort level is questionable. Another model we considered was an inflatable with a separate pump. This came in several sizes and inflation time took five minutes. The pump fortunately had rechargeable batteries, so even if it was flat when you arrive at the camp site it can be plugged in to the cigarette lighter of your car.

The one we finally purchased was a queen size model with a built in pump. It inflates in under a minute and deflates flat even faster. The mattress and pump fit snugly into a purpose built small case about the size of a sleeping bag. This cost a bit more, but it can also be used as a second bed when unexpected guests arrive. Our new camping mattress will mean that we can sleep in comfort on our next camping trip.
